There is no town too small to enter the Youth Sports Facilities Arms Race.

Case in point: Pratt, Kansas.

The city is about 90 minutes west of Wichita and only has about 6.5K residents. But it has broken ground on a 109K-square-foot indoor complex with a projected price tag of $14.4M.

  • 10K square feet of dedicated wrestling space (four mats)

  • 6 tennis courts that convert to 5 basketball courts

  • Indoor turf field

  • Locker rooms, training rooms

  • Plans for outdoor amenities, including 4 pickleball courts

Officials said they hope to attract regional events for both college and youth sports; projections suggest a single weekend tournament could generate $300K in local economic impact.

Elsewhere …

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico: A youth volleyball club will repurpose a vacant former movie theater into a five-court complex. The project is expected to cost around $400K and host regional tournaments; the club may be able to start offering boys teams due to the additional facility availability.

  • Berlin, Maryland: The Northern Worcester Athletic Complex will expand, adding six pickleball courts, two multi-purpose turf fields and close to 300 parking spots. There are also renovations planned for existing facilities. Officials believe the improvements will attract more regional and state championship events.

  • Brown Deer, Wisconsin: The proposed indoor complex and multi-purpose district project in the Milwaukee area will be called the North Shore Sports Village. Plans call for the venue to have two ice rinks, basketball/volleyball/futsal courts and a turf field along with retail and dining; funding remains a question as the initial $50M price tag has grown. The Sports Facilities Companies is involved in the project.

  • Chesterfield, Virginia: Ground has broken on a new 28K-square-foot indoor complex next to a brewery. The $5M project is expected to have three basketball courts and indoor turf; it will also be able to host volleyball, pickleball and other sports.
