Texas remains on the girls flag football fence.

The state’s governing body for high school athletics declined to sponsor the sport at the varsity level at its annual legislative council meeting on Monday, kicking the can down the road for the second time in five months.

But the UIL said it will continue to study proposals, leaving the door open for future approval.

Seventeen states have sanctioned girls flag as a varsity sport so far; Ohio was the most recent in July.

NFL Flag says there are an additional 21 state pilot programs and includes Texas in that group, but the state’s pro teams are leading the charge.

The NFL's Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans support the sport at about 160 high schools across the state, according to the Dallas Morning News, with the Cowboys operating a Dallas-area league with 54 schools and about 2K athletes.
