Another youth sports-related bill has been introduced on Capitol Hill.
The bipartisan Sports Training, Recreation, and Opportunities for the Next Generation (STRONG) Kids Act will be introduced in the House by Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) and Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-CA).
The bill would authorize funding equal to 50% of federal excise tax revenue collected from legal sports wagering toward a competitive grant program run by the Health and Human Services Department. The authorization would be for 10 years.
The program would be open to national, regional and local nonprofit organizations — national and regional level orgs would be eligible for grants of up to $5M; they would then provide sub-grants to local orgs of $10K to $50K.
Eligible uses for grant recipients include:
Lowering access barriers and increasing participation
Coach education and training
Concussion and injury prevention
Abuse prevention/response and SafeSport Compliance
Infrastructure investments
Administration of the Presidential Fitness Test
The bill has been endorsed by YMCA of the USA, the National Recreation and Park Association, the Afterschool Alliance, FundPlay Foundation and FundPlay coalition partners LeagueApps, TeamSnap, Under Armour, Players Health and Triple Crown Sports.
