The youth sports facilities arms race now includes a principle with actual arms.
The U.S. Army intends to build a youth sports complex at Fort Bliss. Plans call to convert 124 acres of a former golf course into a multi-field park that will serve both families stationed on the base and the larger El Paso, Texas, community.
The Army said the complex will be designed to host regional tournaments.
10 turf fields
Capacity to serve up to 3K youth athletes and their families
Playgrounds, splash pad
Running loop
Concessions
Expanded parking
Potential for indoor fieldhouse
The complex will be outside the base gates, allowing for civilian access. Several potential private funding partners have been identified; the base is also seeking grants.
The project could lead to over 1K jobs depending on how many tournaments the venue hosts in its first year, according to officials. The complex could generate up to $130M in economic output and over $16M in combined federal and state taxes (parts of Fort Bliss are in New Mexico).
