Some more youth sports-related nuggets from the midterms:

  • Our understanding is the STRONG Kids Act’s backers are committed to a bipartisan bill, so they will look to find a new Republican co-sponsor for re-introduction next year. Current co-sponsor Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) was defeated on Tuesday night, but co-sponsor Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragán (D-CA) was comfortably re-elected.

  • Rep-elect Colin Allred (D-TX) is returning to the House after a pair of failed Senate bids. The former NFL player previously co-sponsored the PLAYS Act to expand youth sports in underserved communities and will likely be a prominent voice on youth sports matters.

  • The future of the Texas Educational Freedom Accounts school voucher program is in question after Democrats won control of state government. The program may not end, but it now faces audits and the possibility of executive vetos and loss of funding. This is something to watch in terms of sports academies and especially with Texas Sports Academy, which has marketed its online platform tuition as being fully covered by the vouchers.
